ART STATEMENT –“BALANCE WITH NATURE” SERIES

Thom Wright 2021

In the Anthropocene Age now upon us, humanity and nature are threatened with destruction and extinction, caused by our success in the Industrial Age. We have massively consumed nature’s resources, grown our population to global dominance, and generated earth-changing levels of greenhouse gases and pollutants that are destroying life, a complex process now referred to as climate change. Some of us recognize that we must search for and restore life to a future balance before the processes of change become irreversible.

My “In Balance with Nature” series of paintings address that future goal of global restoration. In my geometric, hard-edge, abstract painting style, I paint tree symbols in a pictorial environment of balance and exchange. Trees become heated and consumed, their by-products enter the ground and atmosphere, and over time stabilize into a cycle of life. Similarly, my visual relationships make the parts and rhythms that make a dynamically balanced whole. Just as artists today seek compositions of pictorial, dynamic forces in balance, I seek to inspire man’s pursuit of a balance with nature. My abstract paintings present a metaphor of humanity’s goal to conquer climate change caused by past and ongoing burning of fossil fuels, and restore a balance of mankind with nature.  The colors, lines, shapes and spaces in a dynamic balance in its movements and visual forces.

Ron Howlett

SCA member Ron Howlett also has a painting on display at the show. Ron has this to say about his work: "I find viewing the universe, with its powerful abstractions of light and color, a very contemplative experience. I hope my work brings to the viewer a deeper aesthetic experience of the night sky."
