Laura Shapiro

Recently my husband and I moved to Irvine, CA from Nyack, NY in order to live closer to our son and to enjoy the great southern California weather. I have studied at NYU, the Art Students' League, NYC; Women’s Studio Workshop, Rosendale, NY; and the Center for Digital Storytelling, Berkley, CA.

I hold an MS in Art Education from NYU and a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Union Institute, 2004. My dissertation was: “Disrupting What is Happening: Women Make Art to Transform Themselves and Their Schools.” Now retired from a long and meaningful career in education, I spend most of my time engaged with making and seeing art.

Artist Statement

I am a mixed-media artist, currently making painted cardboard collage constructions that hang unframed on the wall. The process of making these is a metaphor for how I wish to live my life - high energy, always changing, piecing parts together to make an exciting and surprising whole, going to the edge, attempting to balance strength and fragility. These pieces explore the endless expressive qualities of color, shape, edges, paint, and cardboard. Artists that inspire me include Elizabeth Murray, Richard Tuttle, Frank Stella, the Gee’s Bend Quilters, Barbara Leoff Burge, Lee Krasner, and Joan Mitchell.

My practice includes other media, found objects, and digital stories.
